6TH GRADE PHYSICAL EDUCATION OVERVIEW

heart rate monitor team

Daily Quality Physical Education – we want you to be active, understand all your options and be lifelong physical movers!  We hope to create a physically educated person. We want you to learn 1) What is fitness? 2) How do you get fit?  And 3) How do you maintain fitness? All students will learn to hook up to heart rate monitors to see the effects of movement on their heart.  All students will know what different zones feel like- high cardio, low cardio and of course your target zone!

The objective of physical education are to develop the physical well-being of students, develop qualities of character and sportsmanship, develop skills basic to games and sports, and promote positive attitudes toward fitness for life. The State of California says 6th grade will emphasis cooperative activities and skills for all activities.  To name a few of our curricular units:
  • hand-eye skills (throwing and catching all kinds of objects),
  • foot-eye skills (locomotor skills,
  • kicking and punting),
  • striking skills (using our hands, feet and levers),
  • jump rope and dance for rhythmical skills,
  • circus skills for balance,
  • coordination and bilateral use of our brain.

Fitness is embedded through out our activities and units.  Technology allows our students to see exactly what level their hearts are at thanks to our heart rate monitors.  Pedometers also allow our students to know how active they are during our class period.
