DON JUAN AVILA MIDDLE SCHOOL

This nine-week course is designed to introduce the student with practical food preparation experiences as well as the functional application of the basics of good nutrition, kitchen safety, sanitation, and equipment. This course also includes the construction of simple hand sewn projects.

This introductory course is designed to help students develop basic knowledge and skills in food preparation, understand the benefits of proper nutrition and provide basic skills in the use of the sewing machine.

This is an advanced course designed to develop life skills for effective participation in the home environment. Students will learn about the use of proper equipment, nutrition, and safety and sanitation in the kitchen followed by cooking labs in which the student will learn various food preparation techniques. Proper etiquette, manners, table setting, hospitality, and ethnic cooking will also be covered. This unit includes sewing construction using the sewing machine and ends with the completion of a cookbook that could become a valued family heirloom.
